His Hands, His Feet, His Wounded Side – Graphic Print

COMMENTARY

One afternoon as I was napping on the sofa, I suddenly awoke with this line in my mind:

His hands, His feet, His wounded side,

The crown of thorns He wore,

Were all a willing price to pay,

To open heaven’s door.

What a beautiful phrase!  Immediately I took pen and paper and wrote the remaining words of the poem. The hands, feet, side and head of the Lord Jesus with His crown of thorns are divine symbols and focal points of Christ’s sufferings and wounds for our sins before and after the crucifixion.  By bearing these precious wounds, He opened up a floodgate of heaven’s grace and salvation for the whole world.  As the second refrain indicates, He could have turned back from the death of the cross and broken the “cruel hate” of the crowds.  However, little did the crowd know that the Christ for whom they bore such consternation and anger would someday stand between them and the threat of hell and everlasting punishment.  We wonder how many of the crowds that jeered Him lived to see the day when they would praise Him instead.  What a mysterious and wondrous joy!

NOTE: This poem is one of many found in the collection Jewels from His Crown
