COMMENTARY

This poem is the very favorite of Rev. Wayne Smith here in Lexington, Kentucky.  Much of the present life of the Christian depends on his remembering God’s faithfulness to him in the past.  As we glorify Him for His great mercy toward us, we are encouraged to walk boldly the holy life in Christ Jesus. How gracious God has been to us all.  He invites us to lift our heads and wash our garments clean.  This knowledge also frees us from the condemning thoughts that we have “blown it” in our present walk with God. We dip again beneath the flow of Calvary’s blood and we are cleansed from all present sin.

It is also helpful to remember the pit from which we were dug. That is, some Christians can become arrogant and prideful in their walk with God, so a little dose of remembering the darkness of the past and hopelessness of our lives before the cleansing blood and forgiveness of God is helpful.  However, we must also think on the grace and mercy of our loving God, who in a moment’s time desires to release us from a lifetime of sin.  The poem reminds us,

When I look back upon my life

To see where I have been,

Except for God’s amazing love,

I would have died in sin.
