When I Look Upon a Child (2nd version) – Graphic Print

COMMENTARY

Jesus’ instructions for us to become as a little child are literal in their meaning.  There is nothing simpler or more beautiful than a smile on the face of a child.  The baby’s mind is a clean slate since it has not lived in the world long enough to learn hatred and selfishness.  Give it time and it will be exposed to enough evil in this present world.  In this poem there is a reversal of examples.  Here, the adult must look to the child’s life of simple love and acceptance as an example.  This is opposed to the instructing adult in the life of the child.  Life is complicated for the adult, but simple for the child.  As we see the babe smile at the simple pleasures such as toys and balloons, we can learn to relax and lean on the Heavenly Father’s power to simplify our lives and give us a carefree and peaceful existence.  As we abandon ourselves to Him in childlike trust, He is given an opening into our hearts and minds to have His own way and guide us successfully through all of life’s troubles.
